Bita Daryabari is the founder of the Unique Zan Foundation and a great philanthropist and humanitarian. Her consistent devotion to causes that benefit the Iranian community make her widely known as one of the most generous patrons of the community. We have seen her support everything from everyman's local 13 bedar, and the 1st Bay Area Norooz parade to the loftier artistic endeavors of both new age and traditional Iranian artists, writers and filmmakers. But her heart and pocketbook go way beyond Persia (The Pun is unintentional--but cute :). She's big on Women's rights everywhere and has supported schools for girls in Afghanistan and helped build a Women's center in Palestine, and she's just getting started. So you see? she's more than a pretty face. However, if you think she's all 'bleeding heart' with a checkbook, think again. She has a disproportionate share of 'brain' too (I know, not fair). She has a Masters in Telecommunications Management, reads people like books, and most impressive of all, her PR savvy is sharp as a tack. She knows that as Iranians stand up to be counted in these philanthropic ways that serve the greater good globally it also advances our collective Iranian image, and slowly re-establishes us as the original champions of human rights and social tolerance. '[Iranian] achievements in the economic, scientific, information, and scholarly fields are now just beginning to become known. We now need to play an equally dedicated role in ensuring that Iran's great accomplishments in the past, her rich contribution to the common human heritage, become a formative part of our identity...' Hence the generous endowment to Stanford at $2.5 million. Under the guidance of Dr. Milani and the Hamid & Christina Moghadam Iranian Studies program, these funds are earmarked to promote Persian studies to enrich not only Iranians studying their own heritage but to offer up an alternative window to other American citizens whose image of Iranians of late has been less than stellar. A dinner to honor Ms. Daryabari and acknowledge her generous donation is scheduled by Stanford for May 6th by invitation only. ...So in a few years when people start to treat us better in the wokplace, the media and the airports, and our would-be Presidents quit calling to 'obliterate Iran' in favor of actual dialogue, we can count Bita in with a growing list of other influnetiial Iranians that stepped up to the plate right when it counted the most. Way to go Bita!
